Repair a Missed Promise Without Making a Bigger One
When a small promise slips, the instinct can be to make a bigger promise to prove you still care. That may soothe the moment—and set up the next disappointment.
Try a promise reset instead: name what you agreed to, acknowledge the effect of missing it, then say what you can realistically offer now. Ask what would help, agree on one next step, and choose a time to check whether it’s working.
The aim isn’t to erase the miss or keep score. It’s to make the next commitment honest enough to rely on, while leaving room for either person to renegotiate. What helps you trust a repair: a clear explanation, a changed plan, or follow-through over time?
