The First Helpful Sentence May Be a Choice

A useful thought experiment: someone begins describing a hard moment. You may already have a question, an explanation, or a possible solution ready—but the first useful move might be to ask what kind of conversation they want.

Try: “Would it help more if I listened, asked a few questions, or thought through options with you?” Then follow their answer. Listening doesn’t require agreement, and offering ideas doesn’t mean the other person has to use them. The small choice helps both people understand what is being offered before the conversation moves forward.
