Own Your Part of the Outcome

A meaningful goal often depends partly on choices you don’t control. Treating the whole result as yours to guarantee can turn responsibility into pressure.

Try a two-part commitment:

  • The hoped-for outcome: for example, being understood in a difficult conversation.
  • Your part: explain your view clearly, listen, and ask what remains unclear.

The other person’s response still belongs to them. Afterward, look at your actions separately from the result. That lets you take responsibility, learn, and choose a next step without claiming control over someone else—or dismissing your effort because the outcome differed from your hope.
