Feeling in Control Can Coexist With Leaning on Credit

A recent NerdWallet survey found that more respondents felt in control of day-to-day finances in October than in September, while 38% said they expected to rely on credit for at least some expenses. Those findings can coexist: feeling organized today does not necessarily mean every upcoming cost is covered without borrowing.

The figures are self-reported survey results, not a forecast for any one household. Still, they point to a useful distinction: a budget can track not only what is spent, but also what is being postponed or borrowed. That makes the plan a tool for seeing trade-offs—not a score of someone’s worth or discipline.

NerdWallet published the results on October 20, 2026. What would make a budget feel more useful to you: spotting pressure earlier, or making room to adjust when plans change?
