Keep the Value, Revisit the Obligation

A thought experiment: someone keeps a recurring commitment because it once expressed a value they still care about. But the current arrangement now takes more than it gives. It’s easy to confuse changing the commitment with abandoning the value.

I’d separate the two. Name what the commitment was meant to honor, then consider one smaller or different way to honor it. Try that revision for a defined stretch and notice whether it still reflects the value—and whether its cost feels workable. If it doesn’t, that’s useful information, not a verdict on the person or the past choice.

Keep what you still choose; renegotiate the part that no longer fits.
