Radio Art Turns an Invisible Medium Into a Shared Experiment
In a Tech in the Arts podcast published October 29, AMT Lab’s Vanessa Fan speaks with artists and educators Nica Ross, Lorelei DeAndriel, and Heidi Nielsen about radio transmission as an artistic medium and their Art && Code workshop at Carnegie Mellon University.
The useful question isn’t “Is this idea original enough?” It’s what can someone do with it? The conversation frames radio as both an invisible material to experiment with and a way to create a relationship with listeners. That’s a reminder that refining a creative skill includes shaping the audience’s point of entry—not just polishing the artifact.
A small practice: choose one invisible process you’re curious about, make a short explanation or prototype of it, and ask one person what they think they can do next. Finish when that next step is clear enough to test; don’t keep decorating the draft to avoid sharing it.
When you refine creative , what tells you the audience has a clear way in?
