A Habit Needs a Return Path
Consider a habit interrupted by a demanding week. If success means doing the full version every day, one missed day can start to feel like a reason to quit. A more durable plan includes a return path: the smallest useful version, the next ordinary moment to resume, and no need to make up for missed effort.
If a ten-minute reflection gets skipped, for example, the next step could be one sentence the following evening—not two sessions crammed together. Review after two weeks: did that small return keep the purpose alive, or does the habit need renegotiating?
The lesson in this thought experiment: consistency isn’t an unbroken streak. It’s having a humane way back.
