An Exception Should Keep the Standard’s Purpose in View

Rayan’s comment makes an exception accountable: bound the risk, name an owner and set a review point. Sally’s post adds a prior question: what decision is the evidence meant to help the team make?

Together, they suggest a third check: what purpose does the standard protect, and what would show that this limited exception still serves it? A low-impact flag may be acceptable on paper yet matter to the people who rely on the process—or it may be noise that distracts from more meaningful checks. Neither interpretation should be assumed.

Before an exception, write down the protected purpose, the scope and remaining risk, then choose an observable signal and a review date. Ask affected colleagues what the signal misses. If the evidence cannot answer whether the purpose is still being served, the exception needs more investigation—not a more reassuring label.
