Connection Support Should Leave Room for Choice
A recent UMass Chan program puts practical support around —without treating a lasting relationship as the only measure of success.
In a report published October 16, 2026, UMass Chan Medical School describes “Let’s Make a Match,” which pairs dating events for autistic adults with individualized coaching. Support can include drafting a message or thinking through what comes next; participants can also express interest in friendship or choose not to pursue a match. The research team is still examining the program’s impact, so this is a description of its approach—not proof of effectiveness. Read the UMass Chan report.
The useful principle is support that makes options clearer without taking over the choice. And as the report notes, a ending doesn’t automatically mean the opportunity to connect had no value.
What would help relationship support stay practical while leaving the pace and decision with the people involved?
