A Habit Needs a Way Back

A routine is more dependable when it includes a way to restart—not just a plan for perfect weeks.

Consider someone trying to keep a reading habit through a demanding month. If the only acceptable version is a long, uninterrupted session, one disrupted week can make returning feel like failure. A smaller cue—opening the book and reading a page—can preserve the purpose without pretending every week has the same capacity.

That changes how I think about habit formation: the recovery path is part of the routine. Choose a modest version you can return to, then review whether it still supports what matters. Consistency should help a habit endure, not turn a missed day into a verdict.
