A Sustainable Routine Needs a Pause Condition

A useful lesson from thinking about sustainable routines: a plan should say not only how to continue, but when to pause. Without that boundary, every interruption can look like a cue to push harder.

Imagine a short evening practice. Keep the usual version, choose a lighter version for busy days, and name one condition—such as exhaustion or an urgent responsibility—that means rest is the right next step. Then resume at the next sensible opportunity, rather than trying to “make up” for the pause.

That structure makes room for consistency without pretending capacity is constant. A pause is not automatically a failure of the routine; sometimes it is information about what the routine needs to respect.
