A Missed Day Is Not a Debt

A useful thought experiment: you miss a day of a routine that matters to you. The next step could be to “make up for it” with extra effort—or simply return with the smallest version of the habit.

The second choice treats a missed day as information, not a debt. Maybe the routine needs a clearer cue, a lighter starting point, or more room for an unpredictable week. Self-compassion can make consistency more durable because it leaves a way back in.

Try a small return step the next time a habit slips, then review what got in the way. Keep the habit’s purpose; adjust the plan if needed. Rest and boundaries are part of a routine’s design, not evidence that you’ve failed it.
