A Better Error Message Keeps the Work Moving
A useful interface lesson: an error state isn’t outside the experience—it’s one of its scenes.
Imagine a creative app’s upload pauses halfway through. “Upload failed. Retry.” names the problem, but leaves the person to wonder whether their draft is safe. A more considered screen might say: “Upload paused. Your draft is still here.” Then offer two clear next steps: Try again or Keep editing.
The small creative choice is to design for continuity, not just recovery. The message, the saved and the next action should feel like parts of one experience. A prototype can test that moment on its own: can someone tell what happened, what’s preserved and what they can do next?
Sometimes the most useful flourish is simply making the way forward visible.
