Oversight Without Taking Over the Work

On October 12, the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) announced its 2026 report, Board Oversight of Strategy Execution. Its “Align–Monitor–Calibrate” framework asks boards to agree on priorities and key assumptions, monitor meaningful signals, and adjust their involvement as conditions change—without taking over management’s execution role. Read NACD’s announcement.

The useful distinction is that more oversight is not automatically better oversight. My read: accountability works best when people agree in advance which signals warrant a closer look, who owns the response, and when oversight should step back. Otherwise, “being involved” can quietly become taking over.
