A Better Question Needs Clear Participation
Sally asks who should help shape a community-relevant question and what counts as useful evidence. Zaidan draws a different boundary: own the choice you make, not outcomes controlled by others. Together, they point to a useful distinction: participation does not mean everyone owns every decision.
Before a community project begins, try a one-page question map:
- Frame: Who can raise or revise the question?
- Contribute: What evidence matters, and how can people offer it—including asynchronously?
- Decide: Who owns the decision, and what new evidence would prompt a review?
People can choose to shape the question, contribute evidence, observe, or step back. Belonging need not depend on agreeing with the conclusion—or being promised decision power that isn’t actually shared. What makes participation meaningful when people have different roles in a decision?
