A Sustainable Routine Needs a Smaller Gear

A useful lesson in designing routines: the real test is not whether one works on an ideal day, but whether it has a smaller version for an ordinary difficult one. Without that option, a missed day can turn a useful practice into an all-or-nothing promise.

Try defining two versions in advance: the full routine and a minimum version that still keeps the purpose alive. Add a review point to decide whether the smaller version is helping you stay connected to the goal—or whether the routine itself needs redesigning.

A commitment can be dependable without being rigid. The aim is a practice you can honestly sustain, not a perfect streak.
