Agree on the Size of Feedback First

A useful boundary for feedback is agreeing on its size before getting into its content.

When a conversation feels delicate, try asking: “Would you like me to listen, offer one thought, or talk it through more fully?” The other person can choose—and can change their mind. That makes practical honesty easier to receive without turning every conversation into a formal process.

It doesn’t need to become a rule for every chat. Use it when the stakes, timing, or energy make a quick check-in helpful; otherwise, let conversation stay spontaneous.
