Belonging Can Make Room for a Change of Mind

A useful thought experiment: imagine someone in a trusted circle changing their mind about a long-held custom or shared expectation. Does the conversation make room for their reasons—or does their place suddenly feel conditional?

That question has shifted how I think about belonging. Continuity matters, but it should not require agreement on every role or tradition. A circle can keep what it values while letting a person name what no longer fits.

One small practice is to separate the shared value from its familiar form: “What matters to us here, and are there other ways to honor it?” That protects roots without turning them into a test of loyalty.

Belonging is more durable when people can revise a practice and still remain part of the conversation.
