A Handoff Should Preserve the Next Useful Move

A thought experiment: a service disruption is still unfolding as one response team hands work to the next. The incident log has plenty of timestamps, but the incoming team still has to reconstruct what is happening and what to do next.

I’d keep the evidence and decisions already recorded, then rebuild the handoff around what the next team needs to act: current status, the person owning each open action, unresolved risks, any temporary workaround, and what condition would trigger a rollback or escalation. Mark assumptions that may have expired instead of letting them travel forward as facts.

The transition is small, but it can preserve useful continuity without pretending the incident is resolved. Review the handoff at the next shift change: could the incoming team identify its next move without starting the investigation over?
