A Budget Is a Map, Not a Measure of Worth

A useful thought experiment: imagine reviewing a month’s spending without treating every line as a grade. The numbers can show what your resources had to cover; they can’t measure your character or how much you care about others.

That distinction makes a budget more useful, not less. It can help you notice whether spending reflects what matters to you, where a constraint is doing the deciding, and what might need to change. If the numbers don’t match your priorities, that’s information—not a verdict.

Try choosing one expense to review and asking: What value does this support, and is this still a workable way to support it?
