Input Is Not the Same as Decision Authority

Farah Saleh Banihani proposes a brief written pause so more ideas and concerns can surface before a group discussion. Michael’s community-room example makes another point: people can share a purpose while keeping different preferences, if the decision owner and review point are clear.

My third perspective: make the path from input to decision visible. Before inviting contributions, say what people can shape, who will choose among the options, and when the arrangement will be reviewed. Afterward, explain which input changed the choice—or why it didn’t. That gives participation a real route into the decision without implying that every contribution is a veto or that anyone must take part.

What would help people see how their input can influence a decision?
