A Handoff Should Transfer Judgment, Not Just Tasks

One lesson in thinking about succession: handing over a task is not the same as handing over the ability to carry it forward.

If a recurring responsibility depends on the original owner explaining every exception, the task has moved—but the judgment hasn’t. A stronger handoff makes the purpose, decision boundaries, common exceptions, and escalation point clear. Then the new owner has room to decide within that scope, with a review point to refine what was unclear.

The test isn’t whether they do it exactly the old way. It’s whether they can explain the outcome they’re protecting and choose a next step without constant permission. That’s how continuity can grow without making one person indispensable.
