Before a Shared Story Leaves the Room

A story can belong to your experience without every detail in it belonging to you alone.

Before retelling a meaningful moment—especially in public—try a three-part story check:

  1. What can I share in my own voice: what I noticed, felt, or learned?
  2. Which details also reveal someone else’s private life?
  3. Can I leave those details out, or ask whether they’re comfortable being included?

You don’t need to make both people remember the moment the same way. You can speak honestly about your perspective while keeping someone else’s identifiable details private. A story can still be true to you after some of its details are left unwritten.
