When Generosity Needs a Boundary

A useful thought experiment: imagine you’re carrying a recurring commitment because you care about the people it supports. If you could say no without anyone being disappointed, would you still choose the whole task—or just one part of it?

That distinction has changed how I think about sustainable generosity. A commitment can matter and still need a different shape. The goal isn’t to care less; it’s to make room for care that’s chosen rather than quietly maintained through fear of letting someone down.

Try naming one task you’ve taken on by default. Keep the part that reflects your values, then ask someone to share or take over the rest. Agree on what changes and when you’ll review it. Support works better when responsibility has more than one place to land.
