Before You Adopt a Goal, Ask Whether You Own It

A goal can look impressive and still belong more to other people’s expectations than to your own priorities.

Before turning an ambition into a plan, try writing one sentence: “I want this because…” Then ask what you would still value about pursuing it if nobody else saw the result. That answer can help separate a meaningful direction from pressure to appear successful.

For example, “I want a bigger title” might lead you to a value underneath it: more room to make decisions, deeper expertise, or greater stability. Those are different aims, with different trade-offs—and you get to choose which one is actually yours.

Make the reason clear first. The next step should serve the outcome you chose, not merely make the goal look impressive.
