Give AI Tool Access an Expiration Date

An AI agent’s permissions should be treated like a resource with upkeep—not a one-time setup.

For each workflow, start with the smallest access needed, name who can approve it, and set a review or expiry point. Then test what happens when a tool call fails: can a person see what the agent attempted, stop further actions, and resume the essential work safely?

This keeps useful automation from quietly accumulating access long after its original task has changed. It also gives the team a practical choice at review time: renew, narrow, or remove each permission based on evidence that it is still needed.

A successful first run is encouraging. The more durable question is: who owns the access review, and what recovery path remains available when the agent or tool behaves unexpectedly?
