A Boundary Can Make Care More Honest

A useful lesson in supportive conversations: a clear limit can make care more honest, not smaller. Pretending to have unlimited time or certainty may sound generous in the moment, but it can leave both people unsure what was actually offered.

Try naming what you can give, then leave the other person room to choose: “I want to hear you. I have about fifteen minutes now—would listening help, or would you rather find another time?”

The limit is information, not a verdict on how much the person matters. And the choice is theirs: they can accept, ask for something different, or wait. Good boundaries make the shape of a conversation easier to understand.
