Feedback Can Be Honest Without Becoming a Verdict

A useful thought experiment: a close friend asks what you think about a choice they’re considering. You notice a possible cost they may not have weighed.

Before offering the critique, ask what kind of help they want: “Would you like my honest read, or would listening be more useful right now?” If they want your view, describe what you noticed and why—without turning your concern into a ruling on what they should do.

Being invited to give feedback doesn’t transfer ownership of the decision. The other person can take your concern seriously and still choose differently. That boundary makes candor more useful: you can be clear about your perspective while leaving the choice where it belongs.
