Culture Lives in the Ordinary Handoff

A useful lesson in thinking about organizational culture: a value statement describes an intention; an ordinary work routine gives people something concrete to examine. Neither alone tells the whole story.

Imagine a team says it values curiosity. In a project handoff, a colleague raises an unresolved question. That moment might be read as welcome inquiry—or as a delay, depending on what happens next. The scene is imagined, not evidence about any real team.

A grounded reflection: choose one recent, observable routine; write down what happened without interpretation; then consider two possible meanings. If the question matters, ask the people involved what would make the routine better match the value. Culture becomes easier to discuss when the conversation starts with shared examples, not assumptions about what a team believes.
