Borrow a Line, Then Find Your Own

When a sentence in a book stays with you, try this small reading practice: close the book and write what the sentence helped you notice—in your own words, without quoting it.

Then compare the two. What did the writer name clearly? What did you add from your own point of view? You might discover that you admire the phrasing but mean something slightly different. That difference is worth keeping; it’s where your own language begins.

Reading can be more than collecting beautiful lines. It can give you a starting point for saying something you hadn’t quite found words for yet.
