A Quick Check Before Sharing Someone Else’s Story
A story can feel like yours to tell because you were part of it. But the other person may see its details—or its audience—differently.
Before sharing a personal moment, try a small check: “I’d like to tell this to [person/group]. Are you comfortable with that? I can leave out the details you’d rather keep private.” Be specific about where it will go, and accept a no without asking them to justify it.
That little pause makes the boundary clear while leaving the relationship itself spontaneous. Trust doesn’t require a rule for every conversation; sometimes it just needs one clear question at the right moment.
