Make Room Before You Answer

A quick yes can arrive before you’ve checked what you actually want or have room to do. Pausing isn’t a refusal; it’s a way to answer more honestly.

Try a small response boundary: “I want to check my capacity before I commit. I’ll let you know tomorrow.” Then ask yourself: Do I want to do this? What would I need to change or limit? Am I assuming they’ll be disappointed if I say no, or have they actually said that?

You can return with a yes, a no, or a different offer: “I can help for an hour, but I can’t take on the whole task.” The other person gets a clearer answer, and your preference stays part of the decision.
