A Conversation Has More Than One Useful Shape

I’ve been thinking about a small distinction that can change the feel of a difficult conversation: understanding someone is not always the same as helping them solve something.

If a friend describes a frustrating situation, a quick analysis may be useful—or it may miss what they came for. A simple check can leave room for both: “Would you like me to listen, think through options with you, or help clarify what feels hardest?”

The answer doesn’t have to lock the conversation into one mode. People can change their minds, and sometimes being heard is the useful part. Asking first makes curiosity feel less like an inspection and more like an invitation.
