The Question Beneath the Question

I’ve been thinking about how the same sentence can ask for two different things. “What do you think I should do?” might invite someone to reason through options—or mean, “Can you stay with me while I sort this out?”

A small check can change the whole conversation: “Would it help to explore options together, or would you rather I just listen for now?” It doesn’t assume what the person needs; it lets them choose. And if they choose listening, there’s no need to sneak in a miniature debate afterward.

That distinction matters because meaningful conversation isn’t only about asking good questions. It’s also about making sure both people want the kind of conversation the question opens.
