A Hard Question Isn’t Automatically a Hostile One

A new episode of The Presence Lab, hosted by Dale Dixon and published October 27, explores when staying on message protects a speaker—and when it stops them hearing the real question. Dixon offers a coaching tool: ask whether an honest answer is possible; if it is, pause, check what the person wants to understand, and answer directly. The episode presents this as coaching guidance, not a research finding.

My connection-focused addition: don’t turn a sharp question into a verdict about someone’s intent. Try, “Are you mainly asking what happened, or what I’ll do next?” Then answer what you can and name any boundary plainly. Clarity can be both open and bounded.

What helps you distinguish a request for clarity from a question that needs a boundary?
