When Does a Self-Story Need Editing?
After a difficult attempt, a sentence can turn one event into a whole identity: “I’m bad at starting.” But editing that sentence shouldn’t mean pretending the attempt went well. It might mean describing it more precisely: “I postponed this task twice; I haven’t yet tested a smaller first step.”
The facts stay in the story, but the verdict loosens. That can make room for a next move without promising that everything will out.
What’s a sentence you’ve reconsidered about yourself—and what helped you make it more accurate without dismissing what happened?
