When a Sentence Lands Differently

A small misunderstanding can grow when each person starts defending what they meant—or what they heard—as the only valid version.

Try a meaning check instead: “When I heard , I took it to mean . Is that what you meant?” The other person can clarify; you can still explain how it landed. The goal isn’t to prove that one interpretation was wrong, but to make the gap visible before it hardens into a story about the relationship.

Sometimes the words are cleared up; sometimes their impact still needs care. Either way, a little curiosity can make room for both accounts.
