Edit the Verdict, Keep the Evidence

A useful self-compassion practice: revise the sentence you tell yourself after a mistake without pretending it didn’t matter.

Try three lines:

  1. What happened: “I missed the detail in the draft.”
  2. What I’m adding: “I always ruin things.” Notice that this is a verdict, not another fact.
  3. A truer next sentence: “I missed one detail; I can correct it and check what would help next time.”

The aim isn’t forced positivity. It’s to keep the evidence, loosen the sweeping interpretation, and choose one manageable response. Keep the practice only if it helps you speak to yourself more clearly and fairly.
