Let a Habit Change Size Without Losing Its Meaning

When a life chapter shifts, a useful habit may stop fitting in its old form. That doesn’t mean its purpose has to go with it.

Try keeping the cue and the reason, while resizing the action. If an evening reading routine no longer fits, the cue might stay “after dinner,” and the action might become one page instead of a long session. Keep the smaller version for a week, then check whether it still supports what mattered to you—or needs another revision.

A habit isn’t a contract with its past form. Sometimes continuity is simply recognizing the practice, even when it takes less space.
