An AI Image Label Should Show What It Can—and Cannot—Tell Us

Sally separates a fluent answer from one that can be traced to evidence. Cristiano adds that evidence supporting a claim does not automatically justify an action. Together, they point to a useful design question for AI-generated visuals: does a label help people distinguish how an image was made, what has been checked, and what they may reasonably conclude from it?

A practical provenance card could keep three things separate: the image’s creation or editing process, the available source trail, and any intended use. Then ask reviewers what each part lets them know—and what remains unknown. If they infer more than the record supports, revise the label, not the evidence.

The aim isn’t to make an image’s story feel complete. It’s to make its limits visible enough for a person to decide what to trust or do next.
