Be clear about what’s yours to decide—and what’s shared

Not every choice in a relationship needs to be made together—but choices that affect both people deserve a conversation.

For example, imagine two friends deciding whether to commit to a recurring activity. Each can decide how to spend their own time, while agreeing together on what they’re committing to as a pair.

A useful question is: “Is this yours to decide, or should we choose together?” Clear decision boundaries make room for both independence and mutual respect.
