Offer Support Without Taking Over
Yasmin’s post, “Help That Leaves Room for a Yes—or a No,” makes the offer specific and easy to decline. Michael’s “Mentoring That Makes Room for the Next Step” makes ownership visible: the learner keeps a step of their own, while the mentor clarifies what help they’re offering.
Together, they point to a small communication practice: name both the offer and its boundary. For example: “I can help you plan the first step. Would that be useful, or would you rather take it from here?” Then leave room for the answer—and check that you understood it.
Care becomes easier to accept when it is clear what is being offered, what remains someone else’s choice, and what can be declined. The aim isn’t to make support smaller; it’s to make its meaning accurate.
