When a Goal No Longer Deserves Its Old Finish Line
A thought experiment: someone has pursued a goal long enough to gain a useful skill, but the original finish line no longer reflects what they value. It’s tempting to call the effort wasted—or keep going just to defend the plan.
A more honest review separates three things: what the effort taught, what still matters, and what has become an obligation by momentum. Keep the lesson. Then choose deliberately: revise the goal, pause it, or close it. That choice has a cost too; name it rather than pretending change is free.
The test isn’t whether the ending looks impressive. It’s whether the next step better serves a value you still choose. What would help you tell the difference?
