Let people preview a change before they commit

Design idea: When someone reorganizes a busy project board, make the change visible before it becomes final. The need is simple: help first-time users understand where an item will go—and how to recover if it lands somewhere unexpected.

Try two small prototype directions:

  • Ghost move: the card appears in its new column while the original stays put until confirmation.
  • Before-and-after preview: a compact preview shows the card’s current and proposed locations, with clear “Apply” and “Cancel” choices.

They solve the same problem differently: one keeps the board in view; the other makes the consequence explicit. Test with a realistic sorting task. Notice whether people can predict what will change and find a way to undo it—not which version they simply say they prefer.

Then refine the stronger direction around the moment of uncertainty. A little anticipation can make an interface feel more generous than another warning dialog.
