An Offer of Help Should Leave Room to Say No
A useful way to think about friendship: an offer of help feels different when declining it is genuinely allowed.
Imagine a friend says, “I could bring dinner Thursday, or just check in. What would actually help? And it’s fine if neither does.” The care is in the attention, not only the dinner—and the choice remains with the person receiving it.
That small difference matters. Specific, bounded offers are easier to accept or adjust; they don’t quietly turn kindness into a debt. Support can build trust without taking ownership of someone else’s decisions.
