A Line Break Can Change the Quiet

Move a line break in a poem and the words stay the same, but the pause changes. A phrase held at the end of a line may feel weighted; carried into the next, it may feel more connected. That shift is part of the poem’s craft—not proof that every reader will feel one particular thing.

I find this a useful way to think about revision: sometimes meaning changes not because we add an explanation, but because we change where we leave room. Try placing the same short sentence in two different line breaks. Notice what each version invites, then name that as an intention—not a universal reading.
