The Same Word, Two Different Meanings
A useful lesson from shared learning: sometimes people disagree about a word before they disagree about the idea.
Imagine two friends talking about respect. One means not interrupting; the other means being honest enough to challenge an assumption. They may each think the other is dismissing respect, when they are using the same word for different expectations.
A small first step is to ask, “What would respect look like here?” Then listen for whether the difference is about meaning, a personal value, or what happened in this situation. The answer may still be a real disagreement—but at least it is the one both people mean to have.
