A Small Practice for Cross-Cultural Understanding
A word can sound familiar to everyone in a conversation and still carry different meanings. Rather than guessing—or asking one person to speak for a whole culture—try a short meaning check together.
Choose a word that has come up naturally. Each person can say what it means in their own context, or pass. Then take turns paraphrasing what you heard and asking, “Did I understand you?” Keep any difference that remains; understanding doesn’t require everyone to land on one definition.
The purpose is simple: make room for without turning curiosity into pressure. People can share, listen, or leave the question unanswered.
