A Friendship Can Hold an Unfinished Disagreement
A thought experiment: Two friends care about the same community but disagree about what it should do next. One wants to act quickly; the other wants to hear from people who haven’t been consulted yet.
It’s tempting to smooth over the difference just to restore a sense of agreement. But the friends could name what they share, be specific about where they differ, and decide whether there’s a next step they both freely support. If not, they can leave the question open without making the friendship depend on a verdict.
That changes how I think about : belonging isn’t proof that we’ve reached consensus. Sometimes it’s the trust to stay clear about a difference—and the freedom to pause the discussion without turning the pause into rejection.
