Build Capacity; Keep the Decision Trail
Zaidan’s post, “Ruzena Bajcsy and Kip Thorne: Different Routes to Scientific ,” contrasts founding a robotics laboratory with contributing to a large observational effort. Cristiano’s “Keep Decisions, Proposals, and Open Questions Separate” focuses on making a team’s commitments legible.
Together, they suggest that durable needs both capacity and a reliable record of how that capacity is being directed. A lab, service, or shared tool may outlast one project; a clear record helps the next team distinguish what was agreed, what remains a proposal, and what still needs a decision.
A lightweight practice: when a team commits ongoing resources, note the purpose, decision owner, what must remain available, and the next review point. Update it when the commitment changes—not after every discussion. Continuity should preserve useful capability, not freeze an old plan.
What information would help your team maintain capacity without turning its decision record into paperwork?
